CA Reveals New ERwin Logo

What’s in a Logo:

Since the early writings of human kind, We have carved our initials in trees, signed our drawings, and written our signature, all in the attempt to protect our identities. This is the same reason businesses design and use logos.

Logos (And Trademarks) are symbolic icons, short yet full of meaning, defining a company’s vision and image in very precise way.

The need for a logo is not a new invention, but is something that can be traced as far back as the Mesopotamians and Egyptians. From porcelains to printed books, logos remained a standard, though it can be found in different forms. The usage of logos (Trademarks) as we know them today started in the 1950s, when multinational corporations started offering a wide range of products and needed a way to maintain a cohesive message.

Most of us still recognize the Lego Logo. It brings us back to memories of playroom days, and of day long ago. The Lego logo stands for building blocks, which for some of us was our very first step towards building Data Models.

Here we can watch the logo of ERwin change over the past 20 years.

When Logic Works first opened their doors they wanted a logo that had a professional look and made it memorable to others. Being the first to market they wanted to logo that conveyed credibility, trustworthiness, and above all professionalism. They also included an ER-diagram in the logo, highlighting their expertise in that area.

As time went on Logic Works wanted to give the data modeling product a personality
and the new logo was presented to the world.

20 years later and people still remember the name ERwin. Logic Works have developed. A logo that saved time and money by giving the company a head start in the marketing of the product. As time marched forward so the design of the logo changed, becoming more bold and highlighting its heritage.

A logo encompasses all the feeling and personality behind a company. With the acquisition of Logic Works into Platinum, the logo was incorporated into Platinum’s “animal” theme- where each product has it’s own animal associated with it Who remembers the ERwin elephant?

When CA acquired Platinum ERwin’s logo became part of a larger family, the AllFusion family of development products within CA. With the acquisition came the new logo.

Fast forward, 20 years later, the need for a logo hasn’t changed much, but its role has now evolved. With web 2.0 and communication enabled by the internet, Logos are no longer just about communicate with an audience, but rather to serve as a visual support mechanism for clients. CA wanted to maintain the recognised look and feel, but update for the new Web 2.0 world.

CA wanted to highlight that (As they did in their 20th birthday party quiz, ) that the ER in ERwin stands for Entity-Relationship modeling (can you see the original LogicWorks ER diagram in the new logo?) and that the “win” stands for the Windows platform. CA also wanted to fit ERwin in with the latest corporate brand, and match to the same colors of blue and green.

So with a fresh, innovative look, one that clients will see on all social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc, CA has launched the new ERwin Logo.

The Logo is dead, long live the Logo.

The Logo is printed with the permission of CA.
